The filter of the type which comprises an outer shell contg. a filter element which employs a granular filter material sandwiched between two annular, perforated panels arranged coaxially around a vertical axis. Gas for cleaning is blown into the shell to pass through the filter element from the exterior to the interior. Inside the filter element is fitted a wind box which can be connected with a supply of cleaning fluid under pressure e.g. compressed air. The exterior of the box has outlet nozzles from which cleaning fluid can be directed on to all or part of the interior surface of the element. Apart from the reverse flow cleaning period, the wind box is normally spared sufficiently from the element to allow free flow of filtered gas from the filter. The filter element and wind box pref. take the form of coaxial, inverted, truncated cones, the wind box being vertically displacable to alter its spacing from the filter element.
