An appts. for catching fumes liberated during the charging of a cake of coal into a coke furnace is constituted by a frame which is applied in a gas-tight manner on the edges of the charging opening during charging. The frame defines a passage for the cake, the width of which is slightly greater than the thickness of the cake. Joints ensuring gas-tightness between the sides of the cake and the vertical walls of the frame are provided on the latter. The vertical sides of the frame are hollow and closed at their ends. They include a longitudinal opening over their whole length turned towards the charging opening. The two sides form chimneys which catch the fumes and conduct them to the upper part of the cell where they are drawn out by the fume collector. Problems associated with the emission of noxious gases or fumes during charging are avoided. Aspirating these fumes through holes in the upper part of the furnace cells does not prevent fumes being emitted by the charging openings partic. at their lower part, because the lowering of pressure created is limited and the passages between the cake and the walls of the cell are very narrow and create high pressure drops.
|
