The instrument housing consists of a column-like structure with internal trunking through which atmospheric air is driven by a motor-driven fan. Air is sucked into the column, which is fitted with recording instruments, via inlets on the edge of the roof. The underside of the roof is fitted with an insect screen. The air drawn down the trunking passes out into the body of the column and out through a venturi nozzle. Air within the roof space warned by the sun's rays is not allowed to accumulate. Rain and precipitation is collected by peripheral channels and by a collector surrounding the outlet nozzle. The collected fluid falls into a funnel used in conjunction with a rain gauge.
