Steam is delivered to a demisting column formed of a vertical or inclined tube of non-corrosive material. The steam is fed to the bottom of the tube and passes through a packing material consisting of beads, rings or short tubes also formed of non-corrosive material. A liq. outlet is provided at the bottom of the column and this includes a steam trap. From the top of the column the demisted steam passes to a condenser with a further steam trap for maintaining the pressure and for permitting the outflow of distillate only. The appts. is used to produce pyrogen-free water to be used in the prepn. of sterile solns. esp. in a hospital pharmacy for infusion or injection purposes. The appts. is simple to operate and is low cost with no moving parts.
