The system folds over the pile of a tufted carpet when winding onto a rotary bobbin, to which the carpet is delivered with the pile towards it. Immediately on reaching the bobbin, the strip of carpet is pressed against it along a line, the pile loops being held back shortly before reaching this line against the travel direction. As they reach the line, increasing pressure forces them against the back of the outermost layer already in place, so that they are folded over uniformly and held in this position.
