System for resisting the axial thrust in the refractory lining of a rotary kiln consists of a number of projections, welded or otherwise fixed to the inner face of the cylindrical wall of the kiln. One of these projections engages into an opening or recess in every segment of the refractory lining. The projecting element is pref. a circular or polygonal tube fitting into a recess of corresponding shape in the refractory block. The height of the element may be less than that of the annular segment. The arrangement securely anchors each refractory segment and avoids the disadvantage of welded rings inside the cylindrical wall.
