PURPOSE:To obtain a benzoic acid derivative corresponding to a benzotrihalide (B) in high yield and purity, by hydrolyzing B in an aromatic sulfonic acid (A), or a solvent consisting mainly of A under heating very readily. CONSTITUTION:A benzotrihalide, e.g. benzotrichloride, of the formula R-CX3 (R is benzene nucleus which may be substituted; X is halogen) is hydrolyzed in an aromatic sulfonic acid (A) or a reaction solvent consisting mainly of A under heating to give the corresponding benzoic acid derivative, e.g. benzoic acid. Preferably, one or two or more types of AlCl3, FeCl3, SnCl2 and ZnCl2 are used as a catalyst. The reaction solvent comprises at least 60% of an aromatic sulfonic acid and water, sulfuric or acetic acid. |
