PURPOSE:To increase the yield and selectivity of methyl methacrylate in the oxidative esterification of methallyl alcohol, by using a catalyst system comprising (i) Pd, (ii) Pb and Ta compound, and (iii) an alkaline earth metal compound. CONSTITUTION:Methyl methacrylate is prepared from methallyl alcohol and methanol. A high yield and selectivity are obtained by using a catalyst system comprising (i) 0.5-20 wt% of Pd, (ii) 0.01-20 wt% of a compound, of Pb or Ta, and (iii) 2-95 wt% of an alkaline earth metal compound. The Pb compound is, e.g. lead acetate, lead oxide, etc. and the Ta compound is, e.g. thallium acetate, thallium nitrate, etc. The alkaline earth metal compound is, e.g. oxides, hydroxides, etc. of magnesium, calcium, etc. |
