Modified hydrocarbon resins are prepd. from the addn. prod. of an olefinic unsatd. carboxylic acid and/or its anhydride, the carboxy gps. being opt. esterified by mono- and/or polyvalent alcohols and/or phenols onto a thermally or radically polymsd. hydrocarbon resin contg. a predominant amt. of 5-12C cycloaliphatic dienes; by reacting the addn. prod. with >=1 of (a) NH3 or a prim. or sec. amine, (b) a free mono-aminoacid or its ester, (c) an N-methylol cpd. of an amine, the methylol gp. being opt. partially etherified with a 1-10C alcohol, (d)) an isocyanate and (e) a thiocyanate, so that 0.1-30, pref. 0.5-10% of the carboxy gps. are converted into gps. of formulae -CONR1R2, -CO-NR1-CO-, or -CO2CH2NR3R4 (where R1 is H, 1-20C alkyl; 1-18C carboxyalkyl or aryl opt. substd. by halogen or 1-8C alkyl, alkoxy of haloalkyl, the whole gp. contg. 1-18C; 1-10C cycloaliphatic or aromatic gp. opt. substd. by halogen, pref. Cl, hydroxyphenyl or 1-4C alkyl or alkoxy; or (cyclo)aliphatic, aromatic or aromatic-aliphatic rest of a 1-4 valent 1-39C (thio)isocyanate opt. contg. still free or capped (thio)isocyanate gps.). The modified polymer is used as a binder for printing inks, esp. for relief printing with engraved rollers. It drys well, has variable solvent viscosity and other cpds. are easily dispersed in it.
|
