An engine having a carburetter or fuel injection system with a fuel-air ratio controller responsive to an exhaust oxygen sensor has a valve 66 which is opened to admit air to the intake manifold in response to the decrease in manifold vacuum in the diaphragm chamber 44 resulting from a decrease in engine idling speed. The ratio controller responds to the sensed extra air to provide extra fuel and thus restore the idling speed.

|
