<p>The scuffing action is carried out by the ends of a number of metal wire cables. The cable ends project freely through holes in a circular flange fixed coaxially to the end of a rotary shaft. The back ends of the cables are pref rigidly fixed in an annular plate which can slide to and fro on the shaft while rotating with the shaft. A compression spring is pref. fitted around the shaft, between the end flange and the sliding, annular plate. Lock nuts, which screw along a threaded section of the shaft, can be adjusted to push the annular plate towards the end flange to compensate for wear of the tips of the cables. Holes through the end flange can be angled towards the shaft axis so that the cable tips splay outwards conically.
