PURPOSE:To prepare a formylated phenol compound in high yield by oxidizing the solution of the reaction product containing a hydroxymandelic acid compound obtained from a phenol compound and glyoxylic acid, in the presence of a specific catalyst without removing the unreacted raw materials. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound II is prepared by oxidizing the solution of the reaction product containing a hydroxymandelic acid compound I (R is H, OH, lower alkyl or lower alkoxy) prepared by reacting a phenol compound with glyoxylic acid in a basic aqueous medium, with O2-containing gas at 80-150 deg.C for 15-60 min. at normal pressures or under positive pressure in the presence of (A) a catalyst consisting of one or more elements selected from Co, Mn, Cu, Fe, Bi, Ni, Cr, Zn, Al, Ag and V, one or more elements selected from Mo, Se, Te, W and Sb, and O, or (B) selenious acid catalyst, without removing the unreacted raw materials. |
