The electric motor stator frame is formed by four or more elongate side plates (1) assembled to form a tubular carcase. In cross section one free end edge of each plate (1) beveled while the opposing end region (3) extends at an angle of preferably 45 deg. to the body of the plate with an orthogonal end edge. The angle depends on the number of plates forming the frame. Each plate has one or more longitudinal exterior grooves (5) in which slots (6) are secured, for example by welding. Each plate (1) also supports in the interior of the frame a separate elongate permanent magnet block (8) which is secured to the slats (6) by pins (9) with interposed spacers (10), where necessary to vary the dia. of the magnetic field generated by the magnets (8). The construction is suited to plates formed from stacked laminations and avoids problems of instability while providing easy assembly.
