Animal feed material is broken up by grinding, mixed with between 5% and 10% of an ammonia solution containing 5% to 25% of ammonia, and subjected mechanically to high compression for a brief period, e.g. in a tabletting press; the pressed material is then stored for some hours to allow the decontamination process to proceed freely. Decontaminated material is then treated to eliminate excess ammonia, preferably by neutralising with an organic acid, e.g. a 50% solution of citric acid mixed into the material in the ratio of one part of solution to nineteen parts of material. The complete process can be made continuous by employing a large, holding silo between the pressing and neutralising stages. |
