Oil slicks are recovered from the sea by ships by using a first ship of small tonnage, pref. 5000 tonnes, called skimmer ship, by making it penetrate at low speed into the sheet of pollution liq. to recover directly a mixt. of sea water and polluting liq. When the ship is full of this mixt. it is driven away from the polluted zone and discharged to a second ship of greater capacity e.g. >100,000 tonnes. Finally the second ship is directed to treatment installations pref. on land for sepn. of the constituents of the mixt. and recovery of the polluting liquids. Problems associated with the use of a special treatment ship, e.g. its large draught and high cost are avoided. The skimmer can be maintained at a constant draught as small as possible, e.g. 5 m., so that it can approach dangerous zones. The investment will be moderate; skimmer ships can be distribution in different ports and allow rapid intervention.
|
