The system for extracting energy from waves on water uses a large float having a volum of about six cubix metres. Upright cylindrical posts are embedded in the bed under water, and are fastened together at the toip by a steel cable linking an array of such units. The float is attached between two vertical tubes which slide up and down the two posts, so that waves lifting and lowering the float also lift and lower the tubes. The tubes extend below the water line to toothed racks which engage pinions on a horizontal shaft. The shaft is supported in bearings on short posts embedded in the water bed. Wave movement is thus linked to rotate the horizontal shaft. In storm conditions the floats fill with water through an emergency valve and submerge themselves. They are refloated using a remotely controlled supply of compressed air.
|
