Prepn. of cyclopropane derivs. of formula (I) comprises heating (II) in polar aprotic solvent contg. alkali(ne earth) metal halide or cyanide. (where each Z is CF3 or one Z is CF3 and the other is Cl or Br; and R is 1-4C alkyl). (I) are intermediates in the prepn. of pyrethroid insecticides, esp. by hydrolysis to acids followed by conversion to esters such as the 3-phenoxybenzyl ester.
