The plants are placed in contact with (2-chloroethyl)phosphonic acid in the presence of a nitrogen-containing compound chosen from N-[(trichloromethyl)thio]phthalimide, cis-N-[(trichloromethyl)thio]-4-cyclohexane-1,2-dicarboximide, cis-N-[(1,1,2,2-tetrachloromethyl)thio]-4-cyclohexene-1,2-dicarboximid e, ferric dimethyldithiocarbamate, manganese ethylenebis(dithiocarbamate), zinc ethylenebis(dithiocarbamate), methyl 1-(butylcarbamoyl)-2-benzimidazolecarbamate, and tetrachloroisophthalonitrile. These nitrogen-containing compounds increase the capacity of (2-chloroethyl)phosphonic acid to release ethylene in plant tissues, which makes it possible to reduce the applied quantity of the said acid.
