PURPOSE:To obtain a fiber with high strength, high water resistance and low transmission loss by easy spinning by forming a preform composed of core, clad and jacket parts each made of Si glass contg. a specified component followed by melt spinning. CONSTITUTION:As a glass for higher refractive index part (core) 11 a transparent rod of SiO2 glass ontg. one or more among GeO2, As2O3, Sb2O5, SnO2 and TiO2 is manufactured by a vapor phase axially sticking method or an externally sticking method using chlorides or org. compounds of the above-mentioned compounds. SiO2 glass doped with F and/or B2O3 is then laminated on the outside of part 11 while melting to form lower refractive index part (clad) 12. SiO2 glass contg. one or more among Al2O3, TiO2, ZrO2 and HfO2 if further laminated on the outside of part 12 while melting to form outermost layer part (jacket) 13. The resulting preform is melt spun to obtain an optical fiber with high strength, low transmission loss and high surface water resistance. |
