The machine forms transverse grooves in a strip of clay, having one or more rows of rollers forming them in two adjacent sides of the strip, which is moved sideways in relation to them. The row (6) of rollers (8) is mounted between two supports (3, 4) for the strip (2), and movable at right angles to the travel direction of the latter between first and second position, so as to act in turn against the strip front, top and rear faces as it and the strip move. The strip conveyor (10) is halted while the rollers are acting against the front and rear faces.
