The variable span aircraft wing has a conventional fixed inner portion and a movable outer portion. That part of the latter inboard of the line of action of the resultant aerodynamic force on it when extended is configured to fit closely over the inner portion. A cantilever-rail extension of the main wing spar projects into the outer portion and carries load-transmitting rollers parallel, and located close to, the line of action. When the wing is fully extended these rollers are up against a stop at the end of the rail.
