IMPROVED METHOD OF DETERMINING LIQUID LEVEL OF CHARGE STOCK IN THERMAL CRACKING UNIT An improved method is described for determining the liquid level of a heavy petroleum oil charge stock, e.g. a refinery processing residue, in a thermal cracking unit by measuring the liquid pressure at a location below the liquid level. The improved method comprises introducing a separate stream of said heavy petroleum oil into said thermal cracking unit at said location below the liquid level, said stream being introduced through an opening in said unit at a linear velocity of not less than 5 cm/sec, measuring the pressure of the oil being introduced and determining the liquid level from the pressure measurement.
