A method of effecting flocculation in aqueous systems which comprises applying to said systems an effective amount of a compound or mixture of compounds having the formula: Z-CH2-CHOH-CH2-N(+)-(CH3)2]n-CH2-CHOH-CH2-Z in which Z is either X or -N(CH3)2; is a halogen having an atomic weight greater than 34; and n is an integer of from 2 to 20.
