Large span retractable roof - is of segmental closed membrane form inflated by hot air and mounted on transverse and longitudinal cables

The large span retractable roof may be used on sports stadia or observatories etc, utilising a closed segmental membrane structure which is inflated by hot air or gas. In transverse section the roof has a hollow circular segmental form with the chord membrane (2) constituting a horizontal soffite, being tied by transverse cables (3) in the chord plane togther with longitudinal cables (4) in the curved membrane plane. The cable mountings permit tension adjustment and thermal movements, the longitudinal cable being fixed in position whilst the transverse cables can displace along the long roof axis to effect restraction. The latter cables may be anchored to trollies (8) which locate in special drainage channels, being tied back (9) to the substructure when deployed.
