A crane with a telescopic mast (1) and hinged boom (6) is transported with both mast and boom lying horizontally with the boom uppermost. A cable (10) is fixed to a bracket (11) on the base (4) and passes over pulleys (12, 13) on the counterbalance arm (7) of the boom (6) and then around a pulley (14) at the top, and a pulley (15) at the lower end of the inner member (9) of the mast (1), and finally its end is attached to the top of the outer member (2). The mast (1) is swung to the vertical position by conventional means and at the same time the cable (10) causes the boom (6) to swing to the horizontal position.
