The upper leather material of the shoe receives a moisture content of about 14% to facilitate shaping and production. A pressure chamber (1) is closed by a seal (2) so that it withstands a pressure of about 2 bar. This pressure is accurately measured by a safety valve (8). The steam supply continues until the safety valve (8) opens so that an even damping is possible without additional operations. After placing the uppers on the grids (3) the sealed door (4) is closed and the uppers are moved past a conventional steam producing unit. The counter piece is pressed against the snap coupling (5) and the plastics container holding the uppers is filled with steam until it escapes from the valve (8).
