The anchoring filament is for embedding in a mass of material, and comprises a wire with flattened ends. There are one or more protrusions at each flattened end, typically at the free edges and in the form of pyramids or burrs. The die forming the flattened ends can also from the protrusions, having the necessary bosses and mating recesses in its halves. Alternatively the punch and die can be offset from each other in the lengthwise direction so as to form burrs. Means can also be included for twisting the wire about its axis between the flattened ends.
