Coal is gasified in a pressure gasification reactor 1 under a pressure of 10 to 100 bars by treatment with steam and free-oxygen-containing gas to produce a product gas at a temperature of 300 to 800 DEG C. The product gas is cooled to 130 to 220 DEG C. and produces a condensate which is withdrawn and separated into different fractions one of which contains 70% water. At least some of the latter fraction is mixed with granular coal and the mixture is pressurized to the operating pressure of the gasification reactor. The pressurized mixture is fed to a separator 17 which communicates with the interior of the reactor and in which the coal and liquid are separated. The separated coal is then fed into the reactor while the separated liquid may be recirculated for feeding further coal. The condensate fraction and granular coal may be mixed in and fed to the separator by a lock chamber arrangement 7 or a tubular feeder. <IMAGE> |
