The pick-up loader comprises a portal structure which can be moved towards the heap and carries scrapers to move material down from the inclined side of the heap. A transporter removes the material in a direction at right angles to the direction in which the loader operates. The transporter is a horizontal continuous conveyor with L-shaped cross-section, whose lower horizontal member has a forward edge which engages the lowermost part of the heap. The conveyor may move around a partition which is provided along the lower end of the portal.
