Hydraulic tensioning for pressure vessel cover - having tensioning pistons and retroactive pistons to secure the mounting ring, these two being separate to simplify connections

The lid of a pressure vessel is sealed by a hydraulic clamping device. This ha a series of bolts with nuts on them. the nuts close down on what is in effect a hydraulic piston which serves to tension a clamping ring over the lid. Above this ring is a second ring which is attached to a second set of pistons acting in the opposite direction. This has the effect of balancing the upthrust of the first pistons to enable the release of the lid if necessary. The device is used to seal chemical or nuclear pressure vessels, and gives a much simpler construction than existing mechanisms.
