<p>The handrail (8) which may be oval in section, is supported by vertical tubes (1) each with a fitting inside the top to form a joint. A cross strap (2) is welded inside the top of the tube. This has two holes (2c) through it for the two arms of a connecting rod (3) bent into a U shape, to pass through. The ends of these arms are screw threaded and are fitted with bulbous shaped dowels (5), each with a sleeve (6) around it, slotted at the outer end. These bulbous heads are fitted into corresponding holes through the handrail (8). Fitted around the horizontal part (9) of the connecting rod (3) is the looped top of a securing arm (10) bent into the shape of a question mark. The bottom (10f) of this arm is retained by a countersunk headed screw (17) through the wall of the vertical tube. The fixing method can be used in a modified form for other parts of a handrail, including a socket for the base of the vertical tube. A satisfactory rigidity can be obtained for metal rails with concealed fittings, without using welding. This allows the rail to be dismantled.</p> |
