A optimum hole wall surface is created by cuttings carried up by a drill bit (18) from a reformable back up plate (16). The nature of the cuttings cleans, abrades and coats the hole wall surface with a film (17) of back up material. Such material is adherent and can be used for mechanical and electrical interconnections or removed for conventional catalytic processing. Simplified mechanical and electrical interconnections are made possible by virtue of the surfaces coated with the back up material. The reformable nature of the back up material allows it to be continuously re-used.
