Oxides of nitrogen (NO + NO2) in tail gases are destroyed by injecting into the residual gas stream, which is at atmospheric press., a stream of activated nitrogen at atmospheric press. of slightly above. The activated nitrogen reacts with the nitrogen oxides to form N2 and O2. The activated nitrogen is produced eg by passing a stream of N2 through a continuous electric discharge at 1000-1500 V, eg using a hollow anode through which the N2 stream passes, and a cathode situated perpendicular to the anode to form an arc which gives rise to a plasma jet of activated nitrogen. Process gives excellent removal of nitrogen oxides from effluent gas streams, eg those from the prodn. of nitric acid. Effluents contg. eg =3000 ppm nitrogen oxides can be treated to give practically complete destruction of the oxides. Process overcomes prior drawbacks such as deactivation of catalysts in catalytic destruction processes, and gives a prod. which does not causes atmospheric pollution.
|
