<p>The automatic transmission for an automobile has two forward speeds and one reverse speed. When first gear is engaged the drive is transmitted through the torque converter, the clutch, free wheel, shaft and pinion. As the engine speed increases the centrifugal force exerted by steel balls move a sleeve axially and open ports so that the oil pressure in a hollow shaft falls. This drop in pressure disengages the first clutch and at the same time engages a second clutch so that the drive is transmitted directly to the hollow shaft and pinion.</p> |
