PURPOSE:To readily and efficiently obtain the subject compounds which are a raw material for color photographic development couplers, ultraviolet ray absorbers, etc., by alkylating phenols with 3-methyl-1-butene as an alkylating agent in the presence of a cation exchange resin catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Phenols (e.g., phenol or o-cresol) are reacted with 3- methyl-1-butene in the presence of a cation exchange resin catalyst (especially preferably sulfonic acid type cation exchange resin having a giant network structure) to afford tert-amylphenols (e.g., 2,4-di-tert-amylphenols or p-tert- amylphenol). The aimed tert-amylphenols are obtained in high purity and the above-mentioned method is a practical method. The 2,4-di-tert-amylphenol is useful as a raw material for color photographic development couplers, ultraviolet ray absorbers, resin additives, etc., and the p-tert-amylphenol is useful as a raw material for oil-soluble dye intermediates, rubber additives, etc. |
