Purificn. of liq. or gaseous SOF2 is carried out by treating with finely divided anhydrous tetramethylammonium fluoride (TAF) in an excess of >=1 mole % w.r.t. the impurities. The process is carried out by contacting gaseous SOF2 with a bed of TAF, or by condensing the SOF2 on the TAF and effecting liq-solid contact at room temp. Technical-grade TAF can be used. The SOF2 can be prepd. by reacting SOCl2 with HF. SOF2 is useful as a dielectric fluid and a potential pesticide.
