The static scrubber and/or cooler for gases, having a low pressure drop and improved scrubbing effect, has two concentric cylindrical casings (1, 10), between which the gas stream flows downwards; at the bottom edge of the cylindrical casing (10) the gases are deflected to the surface of a scrubbing liquid (7), a circular flow component being imposed on the gases by semi-tangential baffles (9) arranged on the cylinder edge, which circular flow component effects a demisting on the internal wall of the internal cylindrical casing (10). <IMAGE>
