The syn-isomer or a mixture of syn- and anti-isomers of compounds of the formula I <IMAGE> in which R denotes an aryl or heteroaryl group; R<1> denotes a C1-C4-alkoxy group in the 7 alpha -position; R<8> denotes hydrogen or a protective group; and Z denotes a bridge having 2 carbon atoms which can carry substituents, which connects the ring sulphur atom to the carbon atom carrying the carboxyl group, the bridge having a double bond such that a ceph-3-em compound is present, is prepared by N-acylation of a corresponding 7ss-amino compound with an acid or a functional derivative corresponding to the 7ss-acyl group. The process products can then be converted into their physiologically acceptable salts or esters. The compounds of the formula I are distinguished by a broad antibacterial spectrum of action against a number of Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms.
