The tubular body of a container is made by (a) clamping a sheet of non-crystalline polyethylene terephthalate, (b) heating the region engaged by the clamp and at least an annular section of the sheet adjacent that region to a temp. above the glass transition temp. but below the annealing temp., and (c) drawing the clamped region of the sheet to a draw ratio of from 4:1 to 15:1 using a male plug heated to a temp. in the above range. When a flat sheet is used the whole area within the clamp can be heated. The sheet may be a flat sheet to form bodies to which closures can be added, or may incorporate a closure, in which case a male plug having a leading end shaped to conform with the closure must be used. Clamping is pref. effected to leave a clearance between the inner edge of the clamped region and the outer wall of the plug which is not less than 1/3 the sheet thickness and not more than 3 times this thickness.
|
