<p>A method of cooling a hot coke charge using a circulating heat carrier medium which is first heated in direct heat exchange with the coke charge to be cooled, and is then recooled in heat exchange with a heat-consuming device (13), wherein the heat carrier medium used is a finely-divided solid, particularly sand. The cooling of the coke charge is preferably effected in a plurality of stages, preferably in a series of drums (2, 5, 8).
