PURPOSE:To reduce nitrogen oxides present in waste gas to nitrogen gas by passing NOX-containing waste gas through an active carbon on which an aromatic hydrocarbon and NOX reduction catalyst are supported. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic hydrocarbon, e.g., xylene, ethylbenzene, etc., and one or two or more of NOX reduction catalysts, as, for example, of platinum and vanadium series, etc., are supported on an active carbon in a proportion of 100:0.01 to 1:1 to 10 active carbon: NOX: aromatic hydrocarbon by weight. The active carbon so treated is filled in a denitrification apparatus and then NOX-containing waste gas is passed through the denitrification apparatus packed with the active carbon catalyst to reduce NOX present in waste gas to nitrogen gas. Because NOX can be reductively treated without the use of ammonia in this way, no troubles such as the blocking of air heater, the corrosion of apparatus, etc., occur. |
