<p>A soln. of amorphous 1,2 polybutadiene (I) of mol. wt. >20,000 contg. at least 50% 1,2-butadiene units and having a crystallinity of 5% at 20 degrees C is reacted with sufficient mono-perphthalic acid to achieve the desired extent of epoxidation the phthalic acid formed in the reaction is removed, e.g. by filtration, and the epoxidised polymer is isolated. Compared with unmodified (I), the epoxidised prods. have better adhesion to textile fibres, metals, glass and wood, improved compatibility with polar reins e.g. epoxy, phenolic and amino resins, and better mechanical properties. New chemical reactions can be carried out by crosslinking at the epoxy gps. by ring opening and grafting. Prods. also have improved resistance to hydrocarbon solvents and petrol.</p> |
