<p>Compounds having the formula: (I) wherein R is lower alkyl; R1 is hydrogen, lower alkyl, hydroxy, lower alkoxy, fluoro, chloro, bromo, iodo or trifluoromethyl and R2 is hydrogen or is a substituent which is identical to the R1 substituent and wherein R1 and R2 can each be at any different position on the phenyl ring or R1 and R2 together form methylenedioxy and are at adjacent carbon atoms on the phenyl ring and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof. In one method, the compounds can be prepared by treating the corresponding .beta.-amino-.beta.-(phenyl or substituted phenyl)-ethylamine with the desired 1,3-bis(alkoxycarbonyl)-S-methylisothiourea or 1-alkoxycarbonyl-S-methylisothiourea. The compounds can also be prepared by treating the corresponding 2-amino-4,5-dihydro-4- (phenyl or substituted phenyl)-imidazole with the desired dialkylcarbonate. The subject compounds are useful as psychotherapeutic agents in treating or palliating abnormal conditions, in mammals, which are related to the central nervous system.</p> |
