A segment-type friction plate (10) for use in a friction coupling device having a number of annular friction plates interdigitated with a number of annular reaction plates in a stack which may be pressured to effect face-to-face engagement of the plates. The friction plate has a core plate (20) with an annular friction zone in which segments (30) of friction material are affixed so as to retard and eventually arrest relative rotary movement of the friction and reaction plates, respectively, upon application of axial pressure to the stack of plates. A lubricating and heat-dissipating liquid may be caused to flow through the stack to form a liquid film enhancing the load-carrying ability of the coupling device. The segments (30) may range in number from 2 to 24 and are spaced apart to provide gap spaced which may accommodate the flow of liquid through the stack. The segments may be bevelled on their end faces, may be of different shapes and spacing and positioned in the same or differing radial positions in the zones. The segments may also be of different friction materials and of different thicknesses to optimize both dynamic and static friction characteristics.
