Blast cleaning appts. for vertical or inclined surfaces comprises an enclosure with a sealed opening to contact the surface and a particle projecting device (4) to direct abrasive particles at an acute angle to the surface (3). A rebound path extends upwardly from the treated surface to a recirculating chamber. The sealed opening has an upper chamber (15) located outside its seal and a fluid flow path to assist the rebounding particles. The projecting device is pref. a centrifugal blast wheel.
