A pulse generator for use in keyboards has an inwardly directed source of radiation in a casting and a detector, matched to it, on the side facing it. The shank of the key is not permeable for the radiation and breaks its path to the detector when depressed. This results in contactless switching and requires no mains voltage. It produces no excessive heat and is not affected by external disturbing influences.
