PURPOSE:To readily, industrially and advantageously obtain the titled high-purity and low-cost compound useful as an antistatic agent for fibers, by subjecting a nonalkaline aqueous solution of polyethylene glycol to flow reaction of an O2-containing gas using a specific fixed bed reactor. CONSTITUTION:A nonalkaline aqueous solution of polyethylene glycol having 180-20,000 average molecular weight in 10-50wt.% concentration and an O2- containing gas are passed through a fixed bed reaction vessel filled with granular Pt-Pd/C catalyst and reacted to afford the aimed compound, expressed by the formula (n is 2-460) and useful as a modifying agent for high polymers and in vivo high polymers. The above-mentioned catalyst is prepared by adsorbing water-soluble salts of Pt and Pd on granular active carbon having about 5-50 mesh grain size in an aqueous solution at pH>=8 and reducing the adsorbed salts with a reducing agent selected from formalin, formic acid and sodium borohydride. Furthermore, operability is improved and the aimed compound is continuously obtained in a small reaction apparatus for a short time. |
