Device has a casing with a removable filter which retains the particles and is carried by a carrier which can be removed from the casing in a singleoperation. The carrier has a gas inlet which can be sealingly connected to the gas inlet in the casing, leading from the sampling pipe. The carrier is pref. of a shape which diverges away from the inlet, e.g. frusto-conical. The filter can be detachable from the carrier or can form a wall of the carrier, and can rest against a porous or perforate support plate in the wall of the casing. The device is used in measuring the particle content of gases. The carrier is light and can readily be weighed on its own to determine the wt. of particulate matter collected in it. The use of a closed carrier avoids loss of material with resultant inaccuracy.
