Penem derivatives have the formula:- <IMAGE> R<1>=C1-C3 alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or haloalkyl R<2>=COOH, esterified COOH, COO- n=0-3 Y=H, alkyl, halogen, CN, OH, SH, NH2, alkoxy, alkylthio, alkylamino, dialkylamino, aryloxy, arylthio, arylamino, alkoxycarbonyl, NO2, acyloxy, acylthio, acylamino, OCONH2, SCONH2, NHCONH2, R<3>R<4>N.CO, R<3>R<4>N.SO, R<3>R<4>N.SO2, R<3> and R<4> independently = H, alkyl, aralkyl, aryl or NR<3>R<4>=heteromonocyclic or heterbicyclic, X = any of the values of Y except H and (when n>0) alkyl, if the pyridyl is 3-pyridyl or 4-pyridyl, Y NOTEQUAL H and X, Y NOTEQUAL 2Cl. Some of the above groups may be otpionally substituted or protected. Certain other penem derivatives are also disclosed. Compounds I, their salts and ester prodrugs have anti-bacterial activity. |
