Combined rotating and linear motor - has two discrete windings in single comb structured stator

The motor provides rotational movement and also linear movement by translation. The motor has a soft iron cylinder (1) running in bearings (3) at each end of the overall cylindrical structure. The tube has two degrees of freedom, rotational and axial, and two windings on the single stator. One coil (4) providing the linear rotation is wound in discrete annuli spaced by a laminated comb structure (8). The second coil (10) is wave-wound generating a field through further laminations n12) set around the perimeter of the winding. The stator is held rigid by wedges (13) between the two coil structure.
